A big star, yet so much for a role!
Actress Zeenat Aman broke the stereotype of Indian women in Hindi cinema. In the film ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’, he played one such character (Roopa) for which he was also highly appreciated. When Zeenat Aman first heard about Roopa’s character from Raj Kapoor’s mouth, she was very impressed.
In those days Zeenat Aman was shooting for the film, ‘Vakil Babu’ with Raj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor often told her about his film ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’, after hearing which Zeenat Aman fell in love with Roopa’s character. To get the role of Roopa in the film, Zeenat Aman approached Raj Kapoor dressed up as Roopa, after which she cast Zeenat in the film.
This anecdote was mentioned by Zeenat in an interview given to BBC Asian Network. She had told, ‘I was working with Raj Kapoor in the film Vakil Babu. We used to be on the sets and he would always talk about his project Satyam Shivam Sundaram. He used to talk a lot about the main character of the film, Roopa. I was fascinated by the character of Roopa.
Zeenat Aman used to play urban characters in those days and the audience also loved her in the same way. But Roopa was a village girl who was no less than a challenge for Zeenat Aman to play.
He had told, ‘At that time every actress wanted to work under the direction of Raj Kapoor. I was shooting near Raj Kapoor’s studio. I dressed myself as Roopa as soon as the shooting was over. As soon as the image of Roopa was formed in my mind, I got ready and went to Raj Kapoor’s studio. I told that I am Rupa. He was surprised to see me.
Zeenat Aman further said, ‘Raj Kapoor said that this girl is such a big star but still she is doing so much for a role. He called Krishna ji (Raj Kapoor’s wife) and signed me for the film after giving me some gold coins.
