If you need money, take me, don’t do such small roles – When Shashi Kapoor removed all the scenes of Amitabh Bachchan from the film

If you need money, take me

When Amitabh Bachchan initially came to Mumbai in search of work, late actor Shashi Kapoor helped him a lot. He told Amitabh Bachchan that he has come to Mumbai to become a hero, not to do small roles in films. Actually, Amitabh had become a part of the crowd during the shooting of a funeral scene in Shashi Kapoor’s film, ‘Bombay Talkie’, for which he was going to get 500 rupees.

This anecdote was mentioned by actor Anu Kapoor in his radio show, ‘Suhana Safar with Anu Kapoor’. He had told that there was a friendship between Shashi Kapoor’s father Prithviraj Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan’s father Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Because of this, Amitabh and Shashi also started knowing each other.

Those days Shashi Kapoor was working in Smile Merchant’s film, ‘Bombay Talkie’. A funeral scene needed a crowd. When Amitabh Bachchan, who was struggling for work in films, came to know about this through a friend, he went to be a part of that crowd for money.

When Shashi Kapoor saw Amitabh during the shoot, he called and scolded him. He explained to Amitabh that he has come to Mumbai to become a hero, such small roles are not right for his career.

Amitabh Bachchan told Shashi Kapoor about his financial crisis, after which Shashi Kapoor said that take the money from me but do not do such roles. But Amitabh did not take money from him and completed the shoot. After shooting he got 500 rupees.

Shashi Kapoor then told the director of the film that no shot of Amitabh should be seen in the film. Following Shashi Kapoor’s advice, the director removed Amitabh Bachchan’s shot from the film.
