To confirm that the young murderer used a firearm to carry out the massacre were the results of the autopsy tests on the three cadavers of the Schmidt family. But he also used something else to kill the victims.
As reported by the Iowa Department of Public Safety, dad Tyler, 42, died of one gunshot wound and for multiple acute body injuries. His wife and mother Sarah, also 42, passed away from multiple gunshot wounds.
Their 6-year-old daughter Lula died for one gunshot wound and for strangulation. Arlo, the 9-year-old son, survived the attack without sustaining any injuries. It is not clear if at the time of the massacre he was inside the tent with his loved ones.
The killer who carried out the massacre
Investigators said the killer was named Anthony Sherwinwas 23, and originally from LaVista, Nebraska.
According to what has been reconstructed, he acted alone. After exterminating the Schmidt family in their tent he took his own life with the same firearm. He too was camping that day: he was with his parents.
Mystery about the motive
What prompted the killer to unleash the murderous rampage and carry out the massacre it is not yet known.
The Deputy Director of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Department of Public Security said, “We don’t know what led to this and what caused it.”
From what has emerged so far, the investigations have not revealed “any links or previous interactions between the killer and the Schmidt family”.
